Today data is everywhere—from online shopping, to internet search results, to social media, data is generated from all our daily activities and sensor networks that surround us. Enterprises are making use of this data for operational advantages in many ways. However, when it comes to the utilization of data in the government sector, there is a lack of confidence due to the security and privacy related concerns. “But, with the successful implementation of big data analytics in private sector, even government agencies are now focusing to adapt data capture practices to know more about their citizens and make better decisions to improve agency outcomes,” says Mike Koehler, President and CEO, Teradata [NYSE: TDC]. Teradata assists government agencies in their efforts to collect, integrate, and analyze data through the company’s effective big data analytics technology, providing intelligence from data in innovative ways.

Teradata’s solutions leverage entire data from the legacy transactional systems, ERP systems, sensors, and web within a government agency to deliver a unified view of the agency’s operations and make faster, better decisions. By housing and unifying these different data sources, the company’s integrated data warehousing solution provides a 360 degree view of the business, bringing in management agility to the organization. The warehousing technology also eliminates the time required in reconciling conflicting data and storing them in a single location. Teradata’s advanced analytics solution— Aster analytics subsequently ingests, prepares, and analyzes these data within a single interface, at a tremendous speed and scale, while creating data visualization and operational insights. “Aster empowers analysts and data scientists to execute a wide variety of multi-genre analytics techniques like customers path to conversion (Path Analytics), and customers sentiment analysis (Text Analytics),” asserts Koehler.

Currently, Teradata is working with a regional transportation planning agency in Florida, which will use Aster Platform to identify and address the root causes of pedestrian fatalities.

The platform will allow the agency to analyze contextual data points related to each fatality, reducing pedestrian fatalities. Teradata is using the traffic data from INRIX—a company which provides internet services and mobile applications pertaining to road traffic and driver services—to analyze traffic patterns and measure, speed variability to improve traffic flows.

Employing Teradata’s big data analytics technology, diverse government organizations gain the power to design, implement and maintain their data system. For instance, the company empowers government healthcare units to transform beneficiary, clinical, cost, investigative, audit, and regulatory data into a wealth of policy and operational insights, which can develop a new basis for informed government program management. Apart from delivering solutions to the healthcare sector, Teradata has designed an analytics framework for cyber security and tax compliance, which are major concerns in the government sector. The framework performs the heavy lifting associated with malware analysis, providing broader visibility to resource-constrained teams, greater contextual awareness, and richer forensic capabilities for a deeper understanding of cyber security threats in real time. Further, the company’s analytics solutions close the tax gap and assists government to bring in additional revenue. “Keeping government agencies’ IT manpower in mind, we have designed analytics which is easy-to-use and understand, to supports a data-driven culture throughout the agency,” cites Koehler.

Government agencies need to make sure they deliver the right services; manage and reduce the cost of delivering services with increased citizen satisfaction. Teradata aims to continue delivering technologies and platforms to provide deeper, more meaningful insights about citizens, services, and processes—helping government agencies improve efficiency through more cost effective delivery channels.
